Imagine the adopted hipster lovechild of Paula Deen and Pee-wee Herman and you’ve come pretty close to 28-year-old Thu Tran, whose crackpot online cooking show, Food Party, graduated to the Independent Film Channel last year. Backed by a mostly gay production team and a cartoonlike set, the deadpan Brooklyn-based host has just returned for the series’ second season, along with a parade of screwball puppets including the chain-smoking bisexual loaf Monsieur Baguette. The grossest dish she’ll dream up for audiences this summer? “A lot of things on the show that are gross to other people aren’t gross to me,” Tran says, laughing. “We smoked these cold cuts on a homemade gravity bong with dried oregano and Swiss cheese, then paired it with cotton candy. I didn’t think it would sell to the viewer, so I took a bite of it. It was very…interesting.” Food Party airs Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. on IFC.
